A meditation on solitude, self-dialogue, and quiet resilience

The Witness stands alone in a field of color, gnarled and weathered by time. Its crooked limbs reach upward—not triumphantly, but insistently. There is strength in its posture, though not the kind that boasts. It mirrors the presence of the Other: a familiar, often adversarial voice within. A witness. A challenger. A companion. This tree, like that inner figure, does not disappear in times of joy or suffering. It remains—scarred, rooted, and unshakably present.

In the stillness of The Witness, viewers may find their own version of this presence—the part of themselves that questions, that resists, that never fully disappears. It may stand in opposition, but it never abandons.

This image is not just about isolation. It’s about the relationship we have with our inner voice—the one that knows our weaknesses and our strength, that remembers our stories even when we try to forget. It is the ancient friend. The thorny mirror. The shadow that stays. And in that, it reminds us:

We have always stood firm.

Even when no one else was watching.

About this photograph

This image was created from two photographs made in different places, at different times.

The landscape was captured in the Columbia River Gorge, where wind, water, and terrain move in long, patient rhythms. The tree was photographed in Hawaiʻi, near the base of Mauna Kea, standing alone in open space, shaped slowly by its environment.

These elements were brought together deliberately—not to invent a place, but to give form to a feeling. The tree did not belong to that landscape in reality, but it belonged to the idea the image was holding.

Both photographs were made quietly, with attention to light, posture, and presence. The final image reflects that same intention: not to document a single moment, but to assemble one that feels internally consistent—something experienced rather than observed.

My lab will take care of framing for you, so you don’t have to stress about anything aside from putting the art on your walls once you receive it. Shipping, mounting to acrylic, and a recessed frame are included in the price. Your art will come ready to hang. Just like you’ve seen it in the video at the top of the page.
