Stone & Sky
A marker you only find after you've traveled far enough to need one.
a note from the artist
At the edge of the world, I expected to find a place that I would arrive at, and turn back from.
What I found instead was a meeting. The earth reaching for the sky and the sky descending to meet it.
This meeting place feels like a marker, the kind you come across only after you've traveled far enough to need one. The Stone and Sky meet between what has shaped me and what remains unknown.
This path has been long and hard-won. The path forward is forecast but unknowable.
This place, where Stone meets Sky is an inflection. Continue, stay, or return. I chose to stay a while. I intend to forge forward.

About this photograph
slightly more beautiful than the truth
This piece was photographed in the East Pocket, the high country between Sedona and Flagstaff, at an overlook locally called "The Edge of the World." The spire at the center is known as Jenga Rock — a weathered limestone formation that holds its narrow shape against the canyon below.
I made the photograph on my fortieth birthday. I had been in Arizona for months and had taken many trips out to this country, but had never added a piece from the Southwest to my portfolio. This is the first.
The sky is a composite. I replaced the original sky entirely, and the cloud above the spire was placed deliberately. Both the new sky and the cloud were photographed in Arizona on other days. I work with a lens and a camera — tools made to document the world — but I use them to expand on what I find. My intent was not to replicate the place. It was to render the feeling of being there: the meeting of stone and sky, the quiet that holds at the edge, a single cloud keeping company with a single spire.
This piece sits within a direction I have been moving toward for some time — surreal scenes that begin with the world as it is, then quietly bend it. A sky borrowed. A cloud placed. A composition built to hold the viewer in comfortable isolation. The seams are intentional, and they are not hidden. What you are feeling is real.
Each print preserves a moment of balance and persistence—an invitation to live with a place that no longer exists.

INTERESTED IN FRAMING YOUR ART?
A frame on your artwork can be the bridge between what moves you as a collector and the space where your art lives. Your art includes a recessed frame and all mounting hardware. However, I have a wealth of knowledge about framing and can find the perfect frame for you if you’d like your presentation to include one.
There is a HUGE world of frame options available. I typically frame with Roma moulding and Larsen Juhl. My lab will take care of framing for you, so you don’t have to stress about anything aside from putting the art on your walls once you receive it. If you would like to discuss framing your artwork, write me via the form below or text me at 808.321.8643
