A tempest and a gentle breeze.
One, a twisting, churning roar that
Made time collapse and everything
Happen all at once.
The other, a warm sensation on a cool breeze.
A quiet suggestion of the world in motion.

About This Photograph

Skógafoss, Iceland. April.

I spent three weeks in Iceland for my birthday, living out of a camper van while the country turned from winter to spring.

Driving toward Skógafoss one morning, I saw lenticular clouds forming over the mountains to the northeast. The light on the falls was so good that I almost stopped.

The waterfall would be there all week but…


Clouds like these are rare.

So I chased them. A two-hour quest of side roads and off-road tracks, looking for a clear view. I found it on a road toward the glacier, in a soft green pasture scattered with boulders. I captured the frames of the clouds knowing it would belong to another image someday.

Then I drove back to Skógafoss.

This piece is a composite. I put the photographs together to render the immensity of the place as it felt, not as it looked from one spot.

I assembled it at 2,000% magnification, checking every pixel, so that the art holds at wall scale.

At that size the details open up. There are birds roosting on the cliff walls, you can see their eyes. Their feathers. A screen can't carry that. The detail images on the website come closer.

The title comes from Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind, where nature moves with something like intention. After that book I started seeing my own time in the landscape the same way. The world, quietly in motion.
