A note from the artist

A witness to the deeply magical. Where presence meets ancient force

Iceland was quiet in a way I haven’t experienced anywhere else.

Not empty. Not lonely. Just quiet.
The kind of quiet that feels protected.

When I saw the horse standing alone on that winter-worn hillside, I didn’t see isolation. I saw something idyllic. A life lived within a herd. Rooted in a place of dynamic beauty. It felt as if the horse had stepped away for a moment — not because it was lost, but because it could.

The waterfall came later. Snow falling. Water descended from dark basalt cliffs like a silver thread pulled from the sky. Elemental. Precise. Almost ceremonial.

They were separate photographs.

But when I returned home, they belonged together.

The horse grounds the scale of the scene. The waterfall gives it force. Together, they create something mythic without trying.

There is an appeal to both that runs deep in us — their wildness, their restraint, the way they mirror something we recognize but rarely name.

This piece isn’t really about Iceland.
Iceland is the container.

The image is about witnessing something that feels magical — and allowing it to be real. The quiet. The scale. The living presence inside something ancient.

A moment taken for oneself.

And the sense that you were allowed to witness it.

About this photograph

I traveled to Iceland in April of 2023 for my birthday and spent 12 days driving the Ring Road. It was the tail end of winter — snow still falling in higher elevations, grasses flattened and pale, the land in transition between seasons.

The waterfall was photographed during a late snowfall beneath dark basalt cliffs. The air was a swirl of snow. The snow softened the distance and quieted the entire valley.

The horse was photographed separately, standing alone on a winter-worn hillside not far from the road. Icelandic horses live in herds and move freely across vast terrain. Seeing one step slightly apart from the others felt less like isolation and more like composure.

These were separate moments.

When I returned home, I saw the composition almost immediately. The vertical force of the waterfall. The grounded presence of the horse. The balance between scale and life.

I combined the two images in postproduction to create the scene as I experienced it — not as a literal documentation, but as a faithful rendering of the feeling.

The final piece preserves that stillness: a solitary presence beneath something ancient, shaped by weather, water, and time.

A frame on your artwork can be the bridge between what moves you as a collector and the space where your art lives. Your art includes a recessed frame and all mounting hardware. However, I have a wealth of knowledge about framing and can find the perfect frame for you if you’d like your presentation to include one.

There is a HUGE world of frame options available. I typically frame with Roma moulding and Larsen Juhl. My lab will take care of framing for you, so you don’t have to stress about anything aside from putting the art on your walls once you receive it. About the prints: I produce my art on a premium substrate that is unparalleled in depth and luminosity. The material refracts light so that it travels laterally through the paper and reflects to the audience, creating a brilliant effect that many mistake for rear illumination.

Each print is then face-mounted to acrylic and sandwiched to a protective backing. The artwork is then framed or a recessed mount is added to the back to float on the wall.

I offer Tabacchino and other handmade framing options. Below are examples in 4” frames with and without liners. More arrangements are available. Liners are available in Black, White, Beige. See FRAMES in the menu above for more frames and liner options.
