a note from the artist
There are two ways into what I call “comfortable isolation.” One is through the removal of distractions—a vast expanse, a still lake, a lone subject that draws the eye inward. The other is through total immersion—so much texture, color, and detail that the noise itself becomes a kind of silence.
This image invites you into a world so rich with movement and color that you can’t help but feel alone inside it. The intricate tangle of moss-covered limbs, set ablaze by a cascade of crimson leaves, creates a visual density that feels mythic. It’s as though the tree is mid-transformation—somewhere between flame and sculpture, story and memory
And yet, in the middle of all this intensity, there’s a strange and soothing stillness. Your gaze is held. The world quiets. You become the only one standing there, beneath the branches, surrounded by fire and time.
“Beautiful Things That Are Gone”
In 2018, I gave a TED Talk about this Tree and three other photographs of places that were destroyed. Please enjoy that talk below. The story of Avendaor is the first that I share.

About the prints: I print on a premium substrate that is unparalleled in depth and luminosity. The material refracts light in such a way that light travels laterally through the paper as well as reflects to the audience creating a brilliant effect that many mistake to be rear illumination. Each print is then face mounted to acrylic and sandwiched to a protective backing. The artwork is then framed or a recessed mount is added to the back to float on the wall. I offer Tabacchino and other handmade framing options. Available starting at 20”x40" and as long as 120” with custom sizes in between. Below are examples of a 40” edition in a variety of frames with and without liners. More arrangements are available. Liners are available in Black, White, Beige. See FRAMES in the menu above for more frames and liner options.
